The primary focus of this workbook is on helping participants increase self-awareness, learn more about how their brain works, identify what they are good at and what they can get better at, think about their goals, and learn to manage their emotions and behavior.

The emphasis in this part of the program is on positive sense of self and self-control. Positive sense of self includes enhancing feelings about self (self-esteem), understanding personal strengths and challenges (self-awareness), and developing confidence in one’s own ability to take action (self-efficacy and sense of purpose). This sense of self provides a foundation for setting clear goals in the present moment and in the future. Self-control includes proactive control (willpower) and reactive control (impulse control and anger management). Lessons in this part of the program are designed to help participants learn more about who they are, what they want to change about themselves, and how best to do this. The emphasis is on making a realistic assessment of their strengths (and weaknesses) and building on their strengths to accomplish important personal goals. There is also a secondary emphasis on mindfulness, which emphasizes being aware and nonjudgmental of experiences in the present moment.

Part 1: Who Am I?

  1. Me, Myself, and I—In this lesson, participants will learn about themselves—their likes and dislikes: their beliefs; and their talents, skills, and strengths. They will also learn to focus on the present moment and think about who they want to be in the future.
  2. Personality Plus—In this lesson, participants learn about personality, how it influences their behavior, and how it makes them unique.
  3. Me and My Brain—This lesson provides important information about different types of intelligence and how changes in brain functioning during childhood and adolescence influence behavior. Participants have the opportunity to practice flexible thinking and learn the “OFF” strategy for making decisions and solving problems.
  4. I Believe: Right and Wrong—This lesson emphasizes the importance of our moral beliefs—what is right and wrong and how we learn the difference. Because right and wrong are complicated and often involve competing claims, dilemmas are provided to stimulate discussion.

Part 2: Managing Myself

  1. The Power of Willpower—In this lesson, participants will learn more about self-control and willpower and how they can go after important goals. They also learn how delaying gratification, resisting temptation, and persistence can help them get what they want.
  2. Impulse Control—This lesson emphasizes how to improve reactive self-control, including identifying triggers for impulsive responding, learning the difference between “hot-headed” and “cool-headed” thinking, and practicing skills for impulse control.
  3. Anger Management—This lesson focuses on anger management, a specific type of reactive self-control that is often particularly difficult for adolescents and young adults. Participants will learn more about their own anger triggers, feelings, and thoughts, and will explore strategies to calm down.
  4. Coping with Stress—This lesson is designed to help participants learn to cope more effectively with the normal stressors of daily life. These include daily hassles as well as more major life changes. Specifically, participants explore coping styles, positive thinking, and relaxation.

Part 3: Where Am I Going?

  1. My Personal Goals—In this lesson, participants review different types of goals in their lives, including how to decide whether those goals are realistic or unrealistic and how to break down long-term goals into smaller short-term goals.
  2. Looking Forward: Overcoming Obstacles—The focus of this last lesson is on how to overcome obstacles, build on strengths, and work toward a positive future self. An important goal is for participants to think clearly about where they want to go and what they want their future to be like.
