Dr. Mary Karapetian Alvord

Mary Karapetian Alvord, Ph.D., is a psychologist with more than 40 years of clinical experience and the founder of Alvord, Baker & Associates. She specializes in treating children, teens, and adults using evidence-based approaches, primarily Cognitive Behavioral Therapies (CBT). Dr. Alvord is an Adjunct Associate Professor at The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences and a Fellow of both the American Psychological Association and the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies. In 2019, she received the APA Society for Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology’s award for Promoting Evidence-Based Mental Health Services for Children and Adolescents.
Dr. Alvord focuses on resilience and strength-based approaches and has coauthored numerous articles and textbook chapters on these topics. Since 2003, she has contributed to the American Psychological Association’s (APA) public education guides on resilience, stress, and willpower.
She is frequently featured in national, local, and international media, including CNN, The New York Times, NPR, The Washington Post, USA Today, and Fox News, speaking on issues such as stress, anxiety, technology use, social competence, and coping with adversity.
