It is with great sadness that Research Press acknowledges the passing of Arthur (Andy) M. Horne. Educator, mentor, and author, Dr. Horne passed away on August 26, 2024. He was 81.
Dr. Horne was an Emeritus Distinguished Research Professor and Emeritus Dean of the College of Education at the University of Georgia (UGA). He dedicated over 40 years to education and mentorship. He earned his Ph.D. from Southern Illinois University and taught at Indiana State University before joining the faculty at UGA in 1989.
At UGA, he served as director of the counseling psychology program and the marriage and family therapy certificate program. Dr. Horne was a principal investigator for the U.S. Department of Education ACT Early Project and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Multisite Violence Prevention Project, focusing on effective teacher interventions for children at risk and reducing violence in schools. He also led the Bully Prevention Program at UGA. His research interests included violence reduction, school aggression, and the development of community and family healthy living programs.
Dr. Horne was a prolific writer, co-authoring 11 books and numerous articles, and directed grants associated with the prevention of bullying and aggression in schools. He was the primary author of the two volume Bully Busters Program with Research Press. His other titles published by Research Press include Empowering Teen Peers to Prevent Bullying and A Parent’s Guide to Understanding and Responding to Bullying: The Bully Busters Approach. He was a dedicated teacher and mentor, serving in various roles at UGA’s College of Education, including department head, director of training, and faculty member in the Counseling and Human Development Services department. After retiring in 2006, he returned to serve as interim and then Dean of UGA’s College of Education from 2008-2012.
Dr. Horne’s passing is a great loss to his colleagues, family, and the individuals who continue to implement his programs. His contributions will be deeply missed by all of us at Research Press who had the honor of working with him.
According to the Horne family, “If you wish to honor, Andy, one way would be to vote in your upcoming election. Andy was an unwavering advocate for social justice, environmental causes, and public education. He was very much looking forward to voting this November.”
