Submitting a Prospectus or Proposal

A formal prospectus is ideal, but if you don’t have one, we’d be happy to accept a proposal that includes the following information:

  • Summary of proposed project content
  • Detailed table of contents
  • Sample chapters or other representative portion (e.g., set of activities), if possible
  • Description of the audience
  • Information about any relevant research or field testing
  • Brief summary of similar books available on the subject and explanation of how your proposed project differs from those books
  • Curriculum vita and/or short bio for each principal author
  • Current contact information for the first author

Our editorial and marketing teams will review your proposal and contact you as soon as possible about publication possibilities.

Guidelines for Manuscript Preparation

Please do not send your entire manuscript unless requested to do so. If we invite you to send a whole manuscript, we ask that you mail a hard copy to the following address, along with word processing files on a CD:

Editorial Department
Research Press
2612 N. Mattis Ave.
Champaign, IL 61822

General Recommendations

When preparing your manuscript, please keep these recommendations in mind:

  • Don’t use any fancy formatting. Unusual fonts, shading, multiple columns, color, borders, text boxes, and other special formatting actually slow us down because they must be removed manually during editing and layout.
  • If your manuscript contains various levels of headings, be sure that all headings and subheadings are consistently styled (for example, the Microsoft Word styles Heading 1, Heading 2, Heading 3, etc.).

Manuscript Style

In general, we follow the style guidelines of the current edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (www.apastyle.org).

Now that we’ve said all that, we would like to emphasize that we are happy to talk to you about any concerns or questions you might have about the submission process or manuscript preparation. Don’t hesitate to call or e-mail our editorial staff if you need any assistance:

If your proposal is accepted, Research Press will prepare and send you a contract. The contract includes standard agreements regarding:

  • Publication rights, ownership, licensing, and copyright (Research Press will copyright the work in the author’s name)
  • Royalties on sales and proceeds from foreign licensing agreements and other sources
  • Responsibilities of each party on such matters as permissions costs
  • Number of complimentary copies to the author
  • Deadline for submitting final manuscript and detailed requirements regarding format of manuscript and any associated files and materials
  • Any additional contractual terms between yourself and Research Press

Production of Your Book

After Research Press has received your final manuscript, we will prepare a production schedule and provide an estimated publication date. You will be assigned a Project Editor, who will help guide you through the process.
